Insights on Copenhagen and Denmark
Sustainability Integrated into Urban Projects
In Copenhagen, sustainability is increasingly embedded from the design phase onward. The Nordhavn district—a major project transforming an industrial area into a sustainable urban neighborhood—illustrates how climate ambitions and material reuse can guide the development of a new part of the city. The building at Thoravej 29 demonstrates a hybrid approach that combines transformation of existing structures with circular expansion, using carefully selected and traceable reused materials.
A Structuring Carbon Regulation
Since 2023, Denmark has enforced a mandatory cap on the carbon footprint of new constructions. The Danish Green Building Council has helped position circularity as a strategic lever to meet these requirements. Material traceability, the use of biogenic materials, and the recirculation of resources are among the solutions employed to comply with life cycle assessment (LCA) criteria.
Circularity as a Response to Geopolitical Pressures
Amid supply chain pressures, resource scarcity, and the energy transition, circularity is no longer merely an ecological choice—it is a strategic response. It strengthens material autonomy, secures access to construction resources, and supports a more resilient economy. It is from this perspective that I work to establish circularity as a pillar of competitiveness for Europe and its cities.
